Relocating a home-based salon is no small feat. Whether you’re upgrading to a larger space, moving to a new area, or even setting up in a different room in your home, the process is both exciting and - let's face it - A LOT. With the Nail Your Career training salon Ulu Beauty’s big move just around the corner on February 4th, I’ve been reflecting on what it takes to successfully transition a home-based salon to a new property. Let me share some key lessons from my own experience to help you plan your next move with confidence.
1. Planning is everything
The first rule of moving your salon? PLAN! Relocating isn’t just about shifting furniture and products; it’s about ensuring your business operations remain as seamless as possible.
Here’s what you need to consider:
Set a timeline: Work backwards from your move-in date. Create a list of tasks and assign deadlines to keep yourself on track.
Notify your clients: Communication is key. Let your clients know about the move well in advance. Share updates on social media, send email reminders, and talk about the move during appointments.
Review your restrictions and insurance: Moving to a new address may require liaising with your local council, updating your business insurance, and other red tape. Don’t let paperwork hold you back, but equally, do not ignore it and hope it'll go away. We even have a freebie checklist for home salons outlining the steps you may need to take to open or re-open a home salon.
2. Think about the layout
The layout of your salon can make or break your working day. A new space is a blank canvas, so take the time to design a setup that works for you and your clients.
Zoning: Map out separate zones for treatments, retail, and storage. A well-organized salon not only looks professional but also improves efficiency.
Lighting: The right light is a game-changer for nail and beauty work. UV gels don't like sunlight, so ensure your nail desk is away from any windows. Do you have a socket in the right spot for your work lamps? Is the overhead lighting dimmable or do you have an ambient lamp for relaxing treatments like facials? What feels trivial when you're planning could end up making your job a lot easier when it comes to actually carrying out your treatments.
Client experience: Think about the client journey from the moment they walk in. Is there enough seating? Is there a clear path from the door to where you'd like them to sit? Does the space feel welcoming? The little details matter.
3. Moving day logistics
Moving is chaotic, there's no doubting it. But preparation makes all the difference. Here’s how I’m approaching it:
Declutter first: Before you pack, take stock of your inventory. Sell, donate, or recycle anything you no longer need. Moving is the perfect opportunity to refresh your toolkit.
Pack systematically: Label boxes clearly and group items by category. Pack essentials like tools, polishes, and appointment books last so they’re easy to access.
Hire help: Whether it’s professional movers or a few extra hands from friends and family, don’t do it all alone. Your back (and sanity) will thank you.
4. Settling into the new space
Once you’re in your new location, the fun begins. It’s time to make your salon feel like home.
Set up quickly: The faster you get your salon operational, the sooner you can get back to serving clients. Prioritize setting up your workstations and retail displays. I'm actually not closing my salon at all while we move, and just moving things over on a day I don't usually work. No wasted time, no lost revenue.
Promote your new space: Share photos and videos of your new salon on social media. Highlight any new features or upgrades that clients can look forward to.
Celebrate: A salon move is a big achievement! Would you host a small opening event to thank your loyal clients and attract new ones? Or have a launch BBQ with your nearest and dearest? Time to enjoy your hard work planning and moving your dream business!
5. Challenges to expect
Even as one of the top three home salons in the UK, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges during this move. Here are a few to watch out for:
Delays: Whether it’s building work, deliveries, or paperwork, delays can and will happen. Build some buffer time into your schedule.
Hidden costs: From redecorating to new equipment, costs can quickly add up. Keep an emergency fund for unexpected expenses, and make a priority list of what needs your financial attention most. Don't go buying a lovely neon sign if you don't even have your desk lamp sorted yet!
Emotional toll: Moving a salon isn’t just physically demanding; it’s emotionally draining too. Don’t be afraid to lean on your support network and take time to recharge and reflect.
Final thoughts
Moving a home-based salon is a challenge, but it’s also an exciting opportunity to grow your business and elevate your brand. By staying organized, anticipating challenges, and embracing the excitement of a fresh start, you can make the transition smoothly.
