Happy Valentine’s Day, Team! Whether you do Valentine's, Gal-entine's or even just Pal-entines, love is in the air—so let’s talk about the perfect match! No, not soulmates, but builder gel and the clients who are meant for it. If you’ve ever wondered whether builder gel is the right choice for you or your clients, here's my take.
The builder gel buzz
Builder gel (in a pot, in a bottle, 'BIAB', brush on, whatever you want to call it) is everywhere right now, and while it’s an incredible product, it’s not for everyone. Because it’s the latest buzzword in the industry, many clients request it without knowing if it suits their nail type or lifestyle. As professionals, it’s our job to guide them to the best option—even if that means saying, “Actually, builder gel might not be the one for you!”
What is builder gel?
Builder gel is a thicker, stronger gel formula designed to add strength and structure to natural nails,. Unlike standard gel polish, it can be used to create overlays, add length with forms or tips, and provide long-lasting durability as an alternative to acrylic or polygel. It's more flexible than its acrylic friends, so it's perfect for strengthening natural nails that are being well-looked after and regularly maintained.
Who is builder gel good for?
💖 Clients who want extra strength – If natural nails tend to be weak, bendy, or prone to breaking, builder gel offers a protective yet flexible layer of armour that keeps them strong.
💖 Those looking to grow their natural nails – Builder gel supports natural nail growth by preventing breakage and splitting, making it ideal for clients who want longer nails without extensions.
💖 Clients who want a lightweight alternative to acrylics – Some people love the strength of acrylics but don’t like the thickness or feel. Builder gel is a great in-between option, offering strength with a more natural look.
💖 Those with an active lifestyle – Whether they’re typing all day, lifting weights, or constantly on the go, builder gel provides durability for clients who put their nails through a lot.
Who might not be a perfect match?
💔 Clients who love to change their nails weekly – Builder gel is designed for longevity and needs infilling, so if someone wants a fresh set every 7-10 days, a standard gel polish or regular manicure might be a better fit. Trust me, these people exist, and we love them.
💔 Clients with severely damaged nails – If the nails are extremely thin, over-filed, or peeling, they may need a break before committing to builder gel. A nourishing treatment plan first can help rebuild nail health.
💔 Those who don’t commit to proper maintenance – Builder gel requires proper removal and infills to keep it looking great. If a client isn’t keen on aftercare, it might not be their best match. Likewise, pickers and peelers will cause even more damage to their natural nails if they pick at their builder gel, so they're best sticking to gel or traditional polish until they can beat the urge to pick.
The verdict?
Builder gel is a dream for many clients, offering strength, durability, and a natural feel. But like any perfect match, it’s all about compatibility!
It doesn't have to be builder gel. There are plenty of light structure gels and rubber bases on the market which offer the strength and flexibility clients want without the need for builder gel. Short nails and biters for example: a rubber base dream, but builder gel won't offer any help (and if anything will provide extra temptation to pick and nibble as it grows out).
